The whole book consists of internet correspondence between two women, Zoe Cross and Agnes Petrella and we are aware from a comment about a redacted email address that something happens involving Zoe as she is part of a criminal case and I was wondering what it could be. I originally picked this up because it was recommended to fans of Tender is the Flesh which has been on my TBR for a while but the cover design finally made me pick it up as I have been craving darker books lately and it’s only just over 100 pages long. Spencer also landed small parts in feature comedies such as "Big Momma's House" (2000) starring Martin Lawrence and "Beauty Shop" (2005) as one of the opinionated clients who frequent a new salon run by its equally sassy owner (Queen Latifah). Adding to her résumé, Spencer appeared on a number of sitcoms such as "Moesha" (UPN, 1996-2001), and guest starred countless times as a nurse on dramas like "Chicago Hope" (CBS, 1994-2000), "Roswell" (The WB, 1999-2001 UPN, 2001-02) and "The X-Files" (Fox, 1993-2002). In the popular film starring Sandra Bullock and Matthew McConaughey, she played a nurse who tended to Ellen Roark (Bullock) after her assault by members of a Ku Klux Klan chapter in a rural town in Mississippi. In 1996, Spencer made her film-acting debut in the crime drama "A Time to Kill," based on the best-selling 1989 novel by John Grisham. She attended Auburn University in Auburn, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. The sixth of seven siblings, the future star always knew that she would pursue a career in the film industry, but never thought that it would be as an actress. Octavia Spencer was born in Montgomery, AL. This one, however, felt different at the beginning. It’s a blend of human complexity, as I think all of Penny’s novels are. But it’s also gentle and full of honesty/dishonesty, and kindness juxtaposed with cruelty and jealousy. It’s sad, a tragedy as most murder mysteries are. But Gamache and Corc O’Connor, those guys I’d like to have dinner with as well as following their literary adventures).īut I’m here to talk about The Kingdom of the Blind, Penny’s book that I just finished. Chief Inspector/Superintendent Armand Gamache is one of my favorite characters to follow and spend time with (along with Corc O’Connor, Cormoran Strike, Virgil Flowers, and a few others. It’s no secret that I’m a fan of mystery writer Louise Penny. His most distinguished and popular accomplishments include Out of the Silent Planet, The Great Divorce, The Screwtape Letters, and the universally acknowledged classics The Chronicles of Narnia. He wrote more than thirty books, allowing him to reach a vast audience, and his works continue to attract thousands of new readers every year. He was a Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oxford University until 1954, when he was unanimously elected to the Chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature at Cambridge University, a position he held until his retirement. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was one of the intellectual giants of the twentieth century and arguably one of the most influential writers of his day. He treats her as an equal, admires her courage and trust her in a way he unable to trust most anyone else. He never wavers in his faith in Alf, even after discovering her secret. I loved watching her blossom and receive all the good things in life she deserves!! While there is some disdain toward ‘Cinderella’ type stories these days, this one does have that ‘rags to riches’ trope going on in the background and frankly, I liked it.īut, have no fear, Alf remains the strong, independent character we know and love, while growing into a feminine young woman filled with passion and desire. This is one of the best books I’ve read in this series. The scruffy boy everyone knows will soon be transformed into a beautiful and dangerously seductive woman, although she remains unaware of her power until Hugh awakens a longing in her she’s never experienced before… However, he still respects Alf's ability to help him, but not in a way Alf would ever have considered… until now. But, living under the same roof with Hugh has the inevitable result, when he figures out that the Elfin boy he’s hired is a girl. He then commissions him/her to help him ferret out the members of the ‘Lords of Chaos.’īut, when Alf is injured, she moves in with Hugh to recuperate, and quickly becomes a favorite of Hugh’s children, Kit and Peter. When Hugh, the Duke of Kyle is attacked, Alf saves him. The eleventh installment in the Maiden Lane series finally gives fans the story they've been waitng for! Duke of Pleasure by Elizabeth Hoyt is a 2016 Grand Central Publication. Anderson later realizes that room number 13 only appears at night and vanishes in the daytime. He does, however, see a door with the number 13 on it next to his own room. Anderson sees that there is no room 13 listed on the blackboard. A blackboard in the hotel lists all the rooms and the names of their occupants. The Golden Lion is one of the oldest buildings in Viborg because it was one of the few structures to survive a devastating fire in 1726. Anderson stays in room 12 at the Golden Lion hotel. During the course of his research, Anderson discovers that, in the early 16th century, Viborg was home to a man accused of witchcraft whose name was Nicolas Francken. The story's main character is a British historian named Anderson who travels to the town of Viborg in Denmark to do some research. It was first published in 1904 as part of the anthology Ghost Stories of an Antiquary. "Number 13" is a short ghost story by the British author M.R. 2013 illustration for "Number 13" by the British artist Hannah Cooper. Or at the very least, being asked to give up one of my major organs. When he then asked me, “Do you have time to talk?” in a completely sober tone, I was pretty much expecting the apocalypse. He never called me by my name unless it had a curse word before it. So when Eli, who usually only called me twice a month and was drunk as a skunk each and every single time, called and started our conversation with “ Gaby-Gaby ” in a sing-song voice, I knew something was up. The seven pounds and face full of acne I gained from stuffing my face with Spicy Cheetos and glazed donuts didn’t help matters either. She then told everyone else in my family that I had cried my eyes out for a week after my breakup and followed that up by watching My Girl every night for a month straight. Who was I kidding? Everyone knew I was pathetic when my best friend, Laila, told my parents I’d been dumped. Although the whole being “pathetic” part was only known by me… and my best friend… and my parents… and my brothers… and my sister… and my nieces. T he last conversation that changed my life started with the words, “Gaby, we need to talk.”Įxactly four minutes and fifty-five seconds later, I was apparently A) not in a relationship anymore, B) homeless and C) pathetic. Amidst the uncertainties of this amazing, magical, horrible, beautiful life, as he puts it, Akif Kichloo writes of love, grief, healing and self care, posting a couple of poems weekly to his various social media pages with a huge following of avid readers and poetry lovers from all over the world. A graduate of JU, Akif holds a bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery. Akif Kichloo is a poet, doctor, musician, photographer, and artist of Indian origin who lives in New York City, New York. She receives a telephone call and drives out soon after. But when UN arrives at Willsson residence, the missus tells him that her husband hasn’t returned from work. Our UN (unnamed narrator, not United Nations!) is supposed to meet Mr. Our unnamed narrator (who goes by many ‘pseudo’ names) arrives at Personville (known as Poisonville) at the request of a newspaper publisher named Donald Willsson. Before I end up writing a mystery novel of my own here, let’s get on with the review of Red Harvest. A laid back village where nothing interesting ever happens until one fine morning (or stormy night), people hear a scream and the next day, a body is found in the moors. I haven’t read a lot of American Mystery Classics till date – I prefer a quaint village setting for murder(s). If you have been following my blog for a while now, you would know I am not a fan of hardboiled mystery. This is the first Dashiell Hammett book I have read. Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett is my first entry for #1929Club reading challenge hosted by Kaggsy and Simon. |
